Hydroponics- Growing Healthy Plants Without Soil

Hydroponics

How do you grow healthy plants withoutsoil?  Simple!  You use 1 of 2 popular and easytechniques: Hydroponics or Aquaponics.

Hydroponics is a method where you grow plants in water that contains mineral nutrients, not in soil.

Hydroponic gardening allows you to give your plants exactly what they need, how much they need, and when they need it…thus making your plants as healthy as is genetically possible.

Your plants that are grown through a Hydroponics system grow faster, have better growth and generally yield more than plants grown in soil.

Aquaponics is a similar method, but instead of adding mineral nutrients to the water, fish waste is used to supply the necessary nutrients that help the plants grow.  And like Hydroponics, soil is not used in the Aquaponics systems either.

So, which system is better…Hydroponics or Aquaponics?

Actually they are both great, but we think Hydroponics is a little easier…not better, just easier.

When maintaining a Hydroponic garden, you don’t need to worry about keeping fish alive or dealing with fish solids floating around the water and clogging up your pipes and drippers, like you do with an Aquaponics system.  And because all the nutrition comes from the nutrient solution (water/fertilizer combination) it’s really easy to control and adjust the strength and ph of the nutrient solution as needed.

Another big advantage to Hydroponic gardening verses Aquaponics gardening is that it’s cheaper and faster to get started.

Screen Shot 2014-10-10 at 12.27.01 PMYour Hydroponic garden can be started as soon as your Hydroponic system is set up (unlike the Aquaponics garden that can’t be started until the proper nutrients are established from the fish waste- and that can take a few months).

To start your own Home Hydroponic system you really only need a few basic things:  a growing tray, a reservoir, a submersible pump to water your plants, a timer, an air pump and air stone to oxygenate the nutrient solution, and of course, light- either natural or artificial. (You also might want a good book to properly show you how to do all this!)

If you are an environmentalist, a survivalist, or someone who just wants to learn a new way to grow healthy food for yourself and those you love, we highly recommend creating your own Hydroponic garden.  It’s a truly rewarding project and way of life.
