What could be cooler for your Halloween party than serving punch with a bloody hand protruding out of your punch bowl?

Every year when my children were little, our first stop on Halloween night was my parents’ house.  And boy, did my parents like to go all out for the holidays!  (Grandparents are so much fun!)

Halloween was especially fun at their house because of all the awesome scary treats my parents set out for the kids.

One of everyone’s favorite was the bloody hand in the punch bowl.

This is a BIG hit for any Halloween party- big or small!

Supplies:

  • One or two disposable rubber gloves
  • Small plastic bowl that fits into your punch bowl or empty milk carton (this is to make a base for the hand to sit on so it stands upright in the punch bowl).
  • Red food color
  • Water

IMG_1959Directions:

Fill up one or two disposable rubber gloves with water. Seal top of glove with tightly wound rubber band and place in freezer.  Make sure hand completely freezes. (I usually leave in freezer 1 day). Gently take glove off hand. (Warning: fingers can break off if not careful.  I use a sharp paring knife to put lots of slices in the glove and then very carefully peel off the glove in pieces). Place unwrapped hand back in freezer until hand pedestal is ready.

IMG_1979After hand is completely frozen, pour water in small bowl or about 5 inches high in an empty milk carton and place in freezer.  Let this partially freeze (we want to set the frozen hand on top of the bigger ice block to help hold the hand upright in the punch bowl).  Before this ice block has started to freeze hard and it’s still a little slushy, poke a hole in the top, about the size of the bottom of hand, and place hand (peeled of its glove) into ice block.  If using a bowl for the hand pedestal, I use extra ice cubes to help hold the hand up until completely frozen to the  ice pedestal.  If using a milk carton, the sides of the carton will hold up the hand until it is frozen in place.  Then gently peel the carton away when hand and ice pedestal are complete frozen together.

When ready to serve your punch and totally impress your guests, place porcelain bowl upside down in punch bowl and set the ice block on top to help keep the ice hand out of the liquid (this is to prevent the bottom of the hand from melting too fast).  Fill the punch bowl with your favorite Halloween punch and add lots of ice cubes to help keep your frozen hand and its pedestal frozen longer.

Put a few drops of red food color on the tips of the fingers and let it drip down the hand for that cool bloody hand look.

Then sit back and watch everyone freak out over the bloody hand in your punch bowl!

Happy Halloween everyone!
